In 1995, a team called the ISLANDERS joined the United Soccer Leagues (USL) thanks to Mr. Joe Serralta and all the great individuals that shaped the club at the time. This pioneering effort will always be part of the history of the dawn of a new era for Puerto Rico's soccer. After an abrupt ending of that first season, Mr. Serralta decided to move the franchise to Houston, Texas, and the team's name changed to the "Houston Hurricanes".
Almost ten years later, Serralta knocked on the USL's door once more to acquire the rights to a new team in the A-League. In this new phase, the club was renamed the Puerto Rico Islanders and was authorized to debut in the 2004 campaign. Serralta was convinced that this renewed soccer venture would require a team of individuals highly committed to the sport; people that would lend total credibility to this highly complex and ambitious project. As such, he handed over direction of the team to the current directors of the Puerto Rico Islanders FC, Corp.
The story that ensued is already known and enjoyed all over Puerto Rico. In 2005, the United Soccer Leagues created the 1st and 2nd Divisions, with the Islanders playing in the 1st Division. The Islanders' 2005 season was outstanding, missing a spot in the playoffs by only one point. In 2006, after only its third year as a professional franchise, and to the pride and delight of the local fans, the Islanders made it to the playoffs; and in 2007, made it to the USL-1 Semi-finals, losing to 2007 Champions Seattle Sounders in penalty kicks.
The 2008 season promises even greater achievements for the Puerto Rico Islanders.
